Gus went back to work feeling heartsick and dragged himself through the rest of his workday. When he got Josh from school, Gus tried not to let him see how sad he was. Josh peered at him curiously anyway and tried to cheer him up with jokes.

"Knock knock," Josh said standing next to Gus's desk at the bistro.

"Who's there?" Gus asked.

"Boo!"

"Boo who?"

"Don't cry. It's only a joke," Josh said and gave him a hug.

When he got home, Gus called Brenda and told her that Jack broke up with him. At first there was only silence from her.

"I can hear you over there choking on that 'I told you so,'" Gus said to her.

On the other end, Brenda sighed. "I'm not gloating. I'm sad for you, honey."

Gus didn't like that either. "Woah. Hold your condolences, missy. I'm not done with him. I might have jumped the gun a little when I kind of told him I loved him, but..."

"What?" Brenda objected. "Any sane man would dump your ass for saying something like that so soon!"

"Are you agreeing with him now? It slipped out. This is just a setback," Gus said stubbornly.

"Gus," Brenda said like she thought he was crazy.

Maybe he was, or at least he was stupid. He had said too much to Jack in the heat of the moment. Then he had watched the heartbreaking look on Jack's face. It was like Gus's love had pierced and wounded him. Now the wall between them seemed more solid than ever, but it wasn't. Gus had seen and felt Jack open up. This was just a setback. He had to believe that.
